“The fun and challenging part of working on a logo is brainstorming and sketching ideas first on paper or screen.”

When ever working on a company logo design, brainstorming and sketching helps define the roadmap “Where are we going“. Whatever the project is, one of the methods to get the mind flowing with creativity is to make a pasteboard pr sketch board. This can be digital such as in a paint or illustration program, or on paper.

The Banks Rice Company logo design project quickly started with some paper sketches but let’s look at what we are working with and what is most important to the client.

• Clean design with strong brand identity
• Easily identify with farming
• Consider how the logo works with packaging
• Use the painting or elements from the painting

First Draft Logo Designs

We usually prefer to provode at least three designs for each company logo design client. This helps narrow down the logo direction and branding colors. Narrowing the design target is essential and must be something the client will love, speaks to the brand identity or product use, and their target audience.

You can see in the first image, flat vectors were not ideal but would be a good foundation to build upon with integrated graphics from the painting. Plus, the vector graphics would provide options to make sure the client knows what that might look like if the painting was too detailed, or client decided to go in another direction.

We started outlining the barn and rice silos and clipped them from the paiting. This allowed us to be able to position them in any place on the logo canvas, get the angles right and adjust contrast.

Fine-Tuning The Logo Designs

The merge of vector and painting coming together as one. Logo taking shape retaining the original painting and the added colors, wraped in retangular shape makes it easy for eye poping identiy and packaging.

The Final Logo

The final logo is something that not only we are happy with, but the client is happy with too! That’s a win and the company logo design works well for their new brand identity. The logo connects with the prodcut, with warm colors. In hindsight, the painting gives a personal feel to the logo. We are glad the painting worked it’s way into the logo as well as it did.

Every logo design project has it’s unique challenges. Sometimes it comes naturally and sometimes it doesn’t. However, following some best practices of design. 1: knowing what the client is wanting. 2: allowing time to brainstorm by hand or digitally can make a huge difference. 3: Broaden your horizon by doing research online with free sites like unsplash, pexels and paid sites like Canva, Vecteezy with help get a handle on how far the ideas take shape.

We’ve made several revisions to dreamhomeconstruction.net over the years since 2007. I visited the internet archive and pulled a few snapshots from the Wayback Machine and wow – what a difference the World Wide Web has gone through.

Some of the content from the archive didn’t load as seen in the screen captures above but it was definitely entertaining to go back almost twenty years!

Maximizing The Elegant Custom Home Photos

Photos are worth a thousand words, so for the 2024 website redesign version we’ve extended the showcase in the top of the website to fill the entire view top to bottom, and left to right. Also bringing the photo container underneath the header and setting the menu to toggle, removed any clutter. Clicking the toggle then opens the menu in a modular overlay, instead of using a traditional method. This works very well on mobile phones in portrait mode. Finally, the viewport was set to the full height of the device so that no matter what device the user is on, it will always fill the space and look amazing!

Adding Horizontal Parallax Effects on Scroll

We wanted to have a creative way to place photos in the view as the user scrolls down the page – but without cluttering up the layout. One idea we came up with for this website redesign in section four was layering the photos and setting them to slide in at different intervals. This creates a nice effect while balancing the visual load as the users scroll targets that section.

Content Focused On The Quality Of The Product

The content was kept to a minimum for this page. The product is good enough to tell the story and keep the user engaged. Our goal – answer the questions: (a) why is this builder the best in the area, (b) what kind of custom home construction work they do, and (c) how can I contact them.

Website Redesign Conclusion

This project had some challenges but was incredibly fun to work on. Seeing everything come together is worth the time and effort. However, the best part of working in creative design is when the client notices the effort and is happy with the result. Because there is a lot that goes into every custom website we build from the HTML and CSS to the handling of scripting code. It is always a great feeling after finishing a website that feels like you’ve accomplished something great.

If you’ve ever had someone vaguely tell you something along the lines of: “just use a standard blue”? I can’t tell you how many times I hear: dark blue, navy blue, or whatever color. This is exactly why I wrote this post. Colors are unique to deisngers in the sense that there’s more going on than just pigment.

Consider: there are flat colors, reflective colors, metallics and gradients just to name a few. Getting color right is essential to the world around us especially when it comes to graphics and brand design.

Colors aslo set a feeling, or mood, or a tone. Why is Coke red? Would you drink it if the packaging was orange? Brand designers put a lot of time an effors into choosing colors on design boards when presenting their work. When a client has a speciffic idea about color but no absolute refrence number, I’ve learned after many years of graphic design and logo projects to make it easier by using a color guide.

The solution to the color problem

There are three main branches of color: RGB (Red Green Blue) CMYK used in offset printing (cyan, yellow magenta, black) and WEB hex color (example: #46A6B6)

Does anyone in the graphic design, pre-press or printing industry remember those “PMS” Pantone Color Matching System colors?

Times have changed and with the growth of the web there are some useful tools that can help define your color tastes exactly how you see them.

TIP: Display settings can have an effect on how color is perceived.

Choosing colors on the web is very easy. Just be aware that everyone has different display resoulutions and settings. Your screen settings have an effect on the how the colors your eyes interpret. For example, if you are using an extreme contrast or brightness setting, the colors very well could be different on somone else’s screen.

Also note that some LCD screens represent colors differently from different vertical angles. It is best praxtice to sit in front of the scren with the center at eye level or just slightly lower.

I am a hard-hitting rock drummer so I have always had some broken snare drums lying around. Someone looked over and said “Look at all of those bronken snares!” That was it – the name stuck!

Project: Beyond Beauty School Branding and Website

I have known the owner, Ramona with Melange Salon for many years. She is a leader in the hair style industry, professionally trained with Paul Mitchell and I can tell you she is really one of those cutting edge (no pun intended) entrepenuers.

Logo Design Concepts

The goal was to design a logo that would easily illustrate change and growth beyond the original state. Finding the perfect design would obviously involve a butterfly. Three examples were offered to the client for review.

Client Review: After review, the client chose the third option because she wanted to have a logo that wouldn’t look too feminine. The third option offered the perfect balance.

Get Specific and Keep it Simple!

The first thing you want consider is the design. I always say “keep it simple!” This is because you want to make a statement quickly and visibly. Keeping in mind that most of the time you probably only have two seconds to get the message across. A creative, bright colorful design that gets right to the point, with a product image and short message or bullet list can make much more impact than four images and a paragraph.

The design is the main ingredient. You wouldn’t want an average design, in an average place, to get an average reaction, would you? No! You want the best design, in the best place, to get the best reaction. Printed Surface: Fabric or Vinyl – Indoor or Outdoor
